The Role

Working overnight shifts – 9.5 hours (9:30pm to 7:30am) Mondays and Tuesdays plus 10 hours (9:30pm-7:30am) Thursdays, this role is to facilitate two sleep studies per night for three night per week. The studies take place in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU), Sugar Glider and Bilby Wards. The sleep studies are complex either because the patients are on ventilation (CPAP, Bilevel) or have complex airways (Tracheostomy) or have behavioural issues.

 

Given the complexity of the service, it is expected that the applicants have both significant paediatric sleep experience and significant ventilation experience (CPAP and Bilevel particularly).  All aspects of the patient’s sleep study set-up and overnight management will be undertaken, as well as the expectation that the successful candidate will actively participate in protocol and procedure development and maintenance. Shifts will be on a two week rotating roster.

 

Key duties of the role will include

  • Provide technical management to two children in Bilby for Sleep Studies on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday nights
  • Provide technical back-up for the junior sleep staff when on shift
  • Maintaining accurate position of electrodes and sensors to ensure adequate sleep and respiratory data are recorded
  • Making appropriate changes to ventilation or supplemental oxygen as per the established procedures and protocols
  • Remove and clean all electrodes and sensors in the morning and ensure appropriate equipment cleaning/infection control adherence
  • Stage the sleep of the Neonates having the sleep studies during acquisition
  • Ensure all data is adequately obtained overnight and transferred to appropriate storage location
  • General administrative housekeeping, including maintenance of filing systems and general departmental filing
  • Participate in and successfully complete training provided by the hospital as directed by senior staff
  • Participate in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of sleep studies. The post holder will be expected to follow agreed laboratory protocols and to produce and to analyse respiratory sleep studies, and written technical sleep study report.

 

To be considered for the role it is essential that you have:

Essential:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science or equivalent, where equivalent includes a degree awarded by an overseas tertiary intuitions which is recognised by the national office of overseas skills is mandatory. 
  • Significant experience working in a paediatric sleep unit and
  • Significant ventilation experience working with CPAP and Bilevel ventilation

Desirable:

•              Minimum 3 years’ experience within paediatric or youth health services desired
