Position Summary

The Hospital

 

The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne (RCH) provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary care to children and young people and their families across Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia.  RCH is the designated statewide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine.

As a quaternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and organ transplantation, as well as other significant subspecialist paediatric services, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia.  The hospital employs approximately 5,000 staff, has an annual budget of $620 million and operates out of a purpose-built, multi-award winning building at 50 Flemington Rd, Parkville.

When it comes to training and research, we partner with the very best.  Our campus partners, the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, along with the RCH Foundation, are on site with the hospital in Parkville.  Together, we are committed to improving the health outcomes for children today and in the future.

 

The Department

 

The department of General Medicine is one of the largest departments at RCH.  Over 7000 patients are admitted under the care of the unit each year, with over 30,000 children reviewed within specialist clinics by departmental staff.  The department has been recognised for its commitment to innovation and quality improvement, having won several awards for our work in the areas of timely access, patient flow and patient safety.  The impact General Medicine has on access and flow within RCH is significant.

 

The Role

 

The Director General Medicine is a key leadership role that provides medical leadership for all General Medicine services in line with The RCH wide vision and strategy.

 

The role has responsibility for:

  • overall leadership, strategy, innovation and operational performance of the department and its services as determined by agreed key performance indicators
  • ensuring the department consistently provides the highest quality care, education and research, whilst maintaining a sound and suitable financial position
  • building effective relationships with the community and consumers of care
  • developing, fostering and promoting strong staff engagement and support
  • building and maintaining a strong and respectful culture by committing to The RCH Compact

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A Medical Degree, fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Physicians and registration with the Medical Board of Victoria
  • Demonstrated experience in a medical leadership position within a complex multidisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated experience in managing people and programs at a strategic and operational level
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to negotiate with internal and external staff and stakeholders to achieve mutual understanding and agreed outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate issues and develop appropriate, stakeholder focused solutions
  • Demonstrated commitment to THE RCH compact and its values

Selection Criteria Essential: Experienced paediatrician with a minimum of 3 years experience post FRACP
Essential: Demonstrated experience in managing people and programs at a strategic and operational level ideally with shared accountability for financial and human resources functions
Essential: Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to negotiate with internal and external staff to achieve mutual understanding and agreed outcomes
Essential: Effective stakeholder management with proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships
Essential: Demonstrated ability to operate in a manner that is consistent with an organisation's values including integrity, honesty and reliability in dealing with people
