The Role:

We currently have 2 fixed term positions to long service leave and maternity leave to join our Microbiology team:

-          One part time position (0.5 FTE) from 21/09/19 to 05/04/2020 available for Grade 1 scientist

-          One part time position (0.5 FTE) from 21/09/19 to 12/01/2020 available for Grade 1 scientist.

 

We will consider combining the positions to a full time position for the dates range 23/09/29 to 12/01/2020.

These positions are being advertised in two separate recruitment processes so applicants interested in combining them into a full time position should apply for both indicating interest in a full time role.

 

The Bacteriology laboratory operates 0830 – 2400 seven days a week, providing a diagnostic laboratory services to both The Royal Children’s Hospital and The Royal Women’s Hospital. The part time positions is for working a five day fortnight including one weekend day as rostered. If the roles are combined into a full time role then full time position is for working a nine day (8.45 hrs/day) per fortnight.

 

Once competency training is complete the positions also require participation in all rosters including weekdays, weekends & public holidays. Occasional rostering on the evening is also required.  The successful applicants will be responsible for participation in a range of laboratory tasks under the direction and supervision of senior laboratory staff in the Bacteriology Laboratory.

 

Key duties of the role will include:

  • Participate in laboratory work rosters including day & evening shifts on weekends and on-call on weekdays, weekends & public holidays.
  • Perform diagnostic laboratory tests, including validation and reporting
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as directed.
  • Adhere to standard operating techniques and procedures documented in laboratory manuals as required by the Quality System Standard ISO/IEC 15189.
  • Participate in departmental continuing education program/s.
  • Assisting other members of the team as needed and encourage teamwork.
  • Assist with internal and external Quality Assurance Programs as directed by senior staff.
  • Implement initiatives in consultation with the Principal Scientist/ Senior Scientists to provide continuous improvements for the laboratory.
  • Participate in research and development projects under the supervision of senior staff as required.

To be considered for the role it is essential that you have:

  •  A Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or Bachelor of Science or “equivalent”, where equivalent includes a degree awarded by an overseas tertiary institution which is recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition is mandatory.
  • An undergraduate or post graduate academic qualification acceptable for membership with; Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS), or, the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists or the Australian Society for Microbiology.  

Also desirable:

  • A major in Microbiology &/or Molecular Microbiology
  • Previous experience or employment in a clinical microbiology pathology laboratory is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience within a paediatric and or obstetrics/gynaecology diagnostic laboratory is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of ISO15189 and its application to diagnostic pathology laboratory and medical testing is advantageous.

Selection Criteria Essential: Do you have a BSc pe BAppSc(MLS) or equivalent?
Essential: Do you have an appropriate qualification to fulfill the definition of a "scientist working in a pathology laboratory" as defined in section 11. (w)(vi)1.) of the Victorian Public Health Sector Medical Scientist Enterprise Agreement 217-2021?
Desirable: A major in Microbiology &/or Molecular Microbiology?
Desirable: Previous experience of employment in a clinical microbiology laboratory?
