The Role:

A great opportunity exists for Grade 1 Medical Scientists to join our Haematology and Core Laboratories at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Royal Women’s Hospital sites. This is a full time on-going or part-time on-going role/s that would enhance your skills and provide you with a depth of knowledge of laboratory services required both at RCH and RWH. The full time role involves 24/7 rotating shifts and on-call while working a 9 day fortnight. Part-time role also involves 24/7 shifts and on-call.


The successful person will be responsible for the performance of laboratory duties, including but not limited to, Haematology, Transfusion Medicine, Specimen Reception and Biochemistry as directed by the Principal Scientist.


To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science), Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) or Bachelor of Science with a major in Haematology and/or Transfusion Science or equivalent, where ‘equivalent’ includes a degree awarded by an overseas tertiary institution which is recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition, which in the case of Medical Scientists is the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS)
  • Demonstrated relevant technical skills and knowledge
  • Professional attitude in interaction with colleagues and internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team
  • Major in haematology/transfusion medicine
  • Previous experience in working in a diagnostic pathology laboratory is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of ISO15189 and its application to medical testing is advantageous
  • Satisfactory police check and Working with Children check

Selection Criteria Essential: Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science), Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) or Bachelor of Science with a major in Haematology and/or Transfusion Science or equivalent
Essential: Qualify for professional scientist membership of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS)
Essential: Appropriate qualifications to fulfil the definition of a ‘Medical Scientist’ as defined in Section 6 of the Victorian Public Health Sector (Medical Scientists, Pharmacists & Psychologists) Enterprise Agreement 2017-2021
Essential: Must be an Australian permanent resident
Essential: Major in haematology and/or professional experience in a Haematology/Transfusion Medicine diagnostic laboratory
Desirable: Experience in blood film morphology
