Position Summary

The Hospital

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Melbourne is one of the world's great children's hospitals. We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas. With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of close to 4,500, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

Paediatric Training

Paediatric training in Victoria is organised through the Victorian Paediatric Basic Training Network (VPBTN, the ‘Network’) under the auspices of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Recruitment into the paediatric training program (the ‘Program’) is coordinated by the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Monash Children’s Hospital (MCH). Trainees accepted into the Program then undertake their basic training at a variety of metropolitan and regional hospitals across Victoria, all of which form part of the VBPTN.

The Role

The first two years of paediatric training is referred to as ‘Resident’ years. Applications are now open for positions on the 2020 Junior Resident Medical Officer (JRMO) rotating roster, employed by RCH. These are 12 month positions, commencing on Monday 3rd February, 2020.

The JRMO roster includes term (13 week) rotations to various RCH departments and secondment hospitals, as well as an allocation to nights, relief and rostered annual leave. Secondment hospitals are located across Victoria, in both metropolitan and rural areas. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to rotate through paediatric emergency, general medicine, surgery and subspecialties.

Most JRMO positions are accredited for paediatric training with the RACP. There are also positions that are unaccredited, which may be useful for junior doctors who wish to experience paediatrics but intend on undertaking an alternate career path.

RCH recognises that having culturally competent Paediatricians improves the outcome of sick children in the community, and also contributes in a positive way to the healthcare outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families. RCH is committed to employing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander doctor/s to enter the Basic Paediatric Physician Training Program at BPT1 (JRMO) level. The aim of the program will be to nurture and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors to be trained as Paediatricians. The JRMO application form includes a question relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status – this information will be used to provide more details regarding this new program to relevant candidates.
