The Role:

The Educational Play Therapy (EPT) Department currently has an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team in a fixed-term part-time role (mat leave replacement) as an Educational Play Therapist in our Emergency Department program. The position involves working 3 week days from 1pm – 8.30pm as part of the RCH Emergency Department Team. The role provides a comprehensive Educational Play Therapy service to children and families in the Emergency department and other areas of the hospital as required. This will require the development and delivery of, individualised support to children and young people to promote effective coping through developmental play opportunities, medical play, procedural support and preparation for procedures. This essential and rewarding role assists in reducing distress and anxiety in children associated with medical procedures and the hospital environment.

A great deal of this role will involve planning support for children undergoing medical procedures such as dressing changes.  Often these procedures can be uncomfortable and distressing for children so the successful candidate will need to demonstrate their ability to support children with this.  It is essential that candidates address the selection criteria and evidence how their previous experience can translate into the Educational Play Therapy role.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Recognised tertiary qualifications in Early Childhood Education or Primary Education
  • Minimum of 2 years continuous and relevant work experience in a relevant discipline (Teaching/Educational Play Therapy/Child Life Therapy).
  • Skills in supporting children to develop coping strategies for adverse events through evidence based play and developmentally appropriate paradigms.
  • Effective communication strategies to maintain excellent interdisciplinary team dynamics
  • Ability to work in a family centred model  to meet the best interests of children and families
  • Experience with children, adolescents and families from a diverse socioeconomic demographic.
  • Skills in problem solving and prioritising in a high pressured, fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of an Educational Play Therapist/Child Life Therapist
