The Department:

The Department of Adolescent Medicine, Royal Children’s Hospital have two exciting 12 month training opportunities available for the 2021 clinical year.

 

The Adolescent Medicine Fellows will experience a variety of exciting training opportunities which include:

  • Conducting a weekly adolescent medical clinic where Fellows will see adolescents for a range of complex medical and psychosocial presentations.
  • Assessing adolescents with Eating Disorders and working closely with their multidisciplinary care team to provide ongoing medical assistance.
  • Providing support and guidance to adolescents experiencing Gender Dysphoria via a weekly triage clinic.
  • Providing medical care to marginalised young people aged 12 – 24 years who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless at the Young People’s Health Service (YPHS) located at Melbourne City Mission in the CBD.
  • Providing medical care to indigenous adolescents at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in Fitzroy and assisting with patient liaison and policy creation.
  • A chance to attend a Chronic Illness Peer Support (ChIPS) school holidays camp with adolescents with chronic illness.

The Adolescent Medicine Fellows will be allocated 5 two week rotations as a junior consultant on the inpatient roster (supported by the 2nd on call consultant) and be responsible for the supervision and mentorship of the junior medical ward staff on rotation for the Department of Adolescent Medicine.

 

Within the Department of Adolescent Medicine there are also many opportunities to become involved in research and to commence or complete your FRACP research project. The Department also conducts medical student teaching with the University of Melbourne including communication training with adolescents through our “hands on HEADSS” program.

 

 

These positions are designed for post-exam trainees and will satisfy RACP D&P training, elective general paediatric (or other specialty) time and some CCH training requirements. The positions would suit both trainees wanting to pursue a career in Adolescent Medicine and those pursuing a general or subspecialty path wanting extra experience with adolescents. Annual leave will be at a mutually convenient time.

 

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • AHPRA registration
  • Eligibility for registration in Victoria
  • Completed RACP exams
