The Role:

The RCH Weight Management Service provides tertiary, multidisciplinary care for children and young people referred with obesity with complex comorbidity. The Service provides multidisciplinary assessment and management. It encompasses the medical specialties of Neurodevelopmental Medicine, General Paediatrics and Endocrinology. Allied health disciplines include Psychology, Dietetics and Social Work. The Service receives referrals from both within and external to RCH.

This role will provide medical assessment, formulation of care plans and ongoing management to patients referred to the WMS and be in integral member of the team.  

You will be responsible for:


Direct Comprehensive Care

This role will provide Consultant Paediatrician assessment of child health status with particular regard to:

  • Assessment of growth, obesity and assessment of physical and psychological comorbidities of weight status
  • Assessment of developmental and functional status (approximately 60% of the children referred have a known diagnosed developmental disability such as ASD or ID) 
  • Preparation of treatment and management plan
  • Liaison and referral to required other services (eg Respiratory for assessment of OSA, psychology for mental health issues)
  • Communication with colleagues, referring doctor, family support services, child and family
  • Provide supervision, secondary consultation and professional support to junior medical staff (including clinic Fellow)

Support of Systems

  • Contributes to writing and revision of clinical practice guidelines, protocols, care plans and education material regarding Weight Management Service at RCH


  • Provides Child Weight Management education to RCH staff
  • Completes all required competencies and essential number of hours of continued professional development 


  • Participates in clinical research that aims to improve understanding and or management of childhood obesity.
  • Development and implementation of research, audit and quality improvement projects.

You will have:  

  • Demonstrated capacity to work harmoniously and collaboratively within a small team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven leadership skills
  • FRACP or equivalent College Fellowship  
  • General or Specific Medical Registration with AHPRA
  • Experience in the assessment and management of children and young people with obesity
