Registered Nurse – Cardiac Theatres


Employment:  Full time, Ongoing and fixed term

Salary:            $65,275.60 - $87,282.00

Location:        Parkville – Hub of the medical precinct and leading Children’s hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) provides secondary and tertiary care to children and young people across the northern and western suburbs; specialist paediatric healthcare to the children of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia; and is the designated state-wide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. As a quaternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and organ transplantation, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia.

The Department:

The Peri Operative Suite is made up of 14 Theatres which are organised in three speciality clusters:

  • High turnover – theatre 1-3 which includes the endoscopy theatre, labs and lines, ENT and Ophthalmology theatres.
  • General theatres – theatres 4-9 include Burns, Urology, General surgery, Plastics and Orthopaedic theatres.
  • Specialist theatres 10 – 14 which includes the emergency theatre, cardiac, congenital, and an intra-operative MRI facility which incorporates the Cardiac Catheter Lab and Neurosurgical theatre.

In excess of 16,000 procedures are performed yearly with a monthly average of 1300 procedures. Our patients range from newborn premature babies to adolescents. We are the designated state-wide major trauma centre for paediatrics in Victoria and a Nationally Funded Centre for cardiac and liver transplantation. Operating Theatre staff combines care of the child and family unit with the demands of complex technological procedures


To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA).
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal and professional development, as evidenced in a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record/Professional Practice Portfolio (PPP).
  • Recent experience in an acute, medical, surgical, and/or speciality area of nursing.
  • Recent Paediatric experience.
  • Extensive perioperative nursing experience
  • Theatre cardiac experience desirable
