The Role: Intensive Care Consultant/PIPER Consultant

A full time Consultant role combining both Paediatric Intensive care and the Paediatric component of the Paediatric Infant and Perinatal Emergency Retrieval (PIPER) services exists at The Royal Children’s Hospital.  The PICU is a combined cardiac and general unit with 15 Specialists.  PIPER covers all of Victoria, southern NSW and northern Tasmania.  The PIPER Paediatric is based in the PICU of the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.  In 2018, PETS received over 1,400 phone referrals and retrieved more than 600 critically ill children.


You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the triage, stabilization and transport advice process including identification of an appropriate receiving unit
  • Working with nursing colleagues to ensure appropriate solutions for complex clinical and logistic issues.
  • Leading escalation processes
  • Development and implementation of research, audit and quality improvement projects for PICU and PIPER Paediatric
  • Leading and participating in multidisciplinary education activities which may include outreach education in non-tertiary hospitals (PICU and PIPER)
  • Providing professional guidance and support for the services JMS and nursing staff. 
  • Working harmoniously with other RCH Departments and Units as well as external stakeholders

You will have

  • Qualifications in Intensive Care Medicine (CICM)
  • Specialist Medical Registration with AHPRA
  • Substantial clinical experience in the management of paediatric intensive care
  • Extensive clinical experience in paediatric transport
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to education and training
  • Experience in training junior staff in transport of children (with simulation) would be an advantage
  • Experience in palliative care would be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
